"Characters":

    Fruits Basket's basis is the old legend of the Sino-Japanese Zodiac animals.
Once upon a time, a god had troubles finding names for the count of years. So he invited all the animal to a party the next day. In the letters, he mentionned that the years would be named after the first twelve animals to arrive at the party.
The cat, who was very lazy asked his neighbour, the rat, to read the letter for him and the rat thinking how to get rid of a rival, told him the party would be held to days from then.
The cow, who was very slow, departed on the eve to be sure to be on time but he didn't know that the rat was hidden on his head. When he arrived, he thought he was first but before he could greet the god, the rat jumped to the ground and paid his respect first! Then, arrived the tiger, the rabbit (or hare - depends on where you are, Japan or China), the dragon, the snake, the horse, the sheep (or goat), the monkey, the rooster, the dog and last but not least, the boar (or pig).
While all the animals (the twelve and others) were partying, the cat was dreaming, longing for the next day.
He was well disappointed the following morning to hear he had missed the party.

Shigure, one of the numerous characters in Fruits Basket paints a Junishi (the twelve Zodiac animals) on pebbles anf let them dry in the sun.
Shigure and many of the other characters are cursed by the Spirit of the Junishi animals (plus the cat)
Shiguré is possessed by the Spirit of the dod.
